Fire Wise Visit

The children were thrilled to meet firemen Tony and Chris who helped us understand how to be fire wise at home and at school.  We learned that matches and lighters are "tools not toys" and if the fire alarm goes off we need to ..."Get Down, Get Low and Get Out".
The firemen told us how important it was to have a safe meeting place at the letterbox, so that everyone knows where to go in the event of a fire.
A big thank you to Tony and Chris for inviting us to the fire station next term...we are really looking forward to that!!
After our Fire Wise visit we joined Room 10 in the hall for our final move it session.  The children had lots of fun practicing what the movements they had been learning and ended the session with some very exciting games involving the parachute.

A big thanks to Maree and the Move It team.
If your child is interested in joining the gymnastics team, there is practice in the hall every Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime, the primary school competition is coming up in mid September.  Gymnastics is a wonderful way to improve coordination and confidence.

Week 11

Hi Everyone,
This is the last week of the term and there is a lot happening.

We have Move It on Tuesday and Wednesday with Maree Hughes, the children are working on their backwards roll and the high bar.  Now is a good time to start thinking about a class Touch rugby team for Term 4:)

The firemen will be visiting on Wednesday morning, we will be learning how to be fire wise at home and at school, the children will be bringing home a handy resource provided by the fire department, please take the time to have a look through with your children and implement some of the ideas within.

On Thursday we will be visiting Paradise Valley with the rest of the Year 0-1 classes.
The cost of this trip is $7.50, please get this paid as soon as possible, a big thanks to those who have paid already. Children will wear their school uniform and will be taking their bags as we intend to eat lunch at the park.
If you are keen to help with transport, please sign and return your form or pop in and see me.  We rely on parents for these trips to be possible so if you are able, please make the effort.

Children must provide their own booster or car seat for the trip, please drop them off to the class on Thursday morning, clearly named.

Bishop Steve will be visiting on Friday, along with some gingerbread men...

If you have any questions about your child's learning or any concerns, please come in and see me.

Writing In Room 6

"Oh you greedy cat!"
Today we read The New Cat by Joy Cowley and used it as inspiration for our own writing.

At this early stage in our writing, we are working hard to find words around the room that we know so that we can use them in our writing.  We keep the writing sessions short and positive, nearly all of us remembered how to spell the and use it in our story. Great work Room 6.

If you would like to support your child to write then a good tip is to let them see you writing, writing things like shopping lists or little notes to friends or family members. The value they place on writing at this age depends a lot on what they see you doing.

To help with our writing we spend some time in the morning learning our letters and sound.  We practice our letter formation and play around making making words with the sounds we have learned.

Wow, Week 10!!

Hi Everyone,
It is week ten already, two more weeks and we will be on holiday.
We have four new students joining the class this week, so we will be slowing things down to let them settle in. It will be great to start Term 3 with a full class, that means two whole terms of uninterrupted learning.  Your children have all adjusted to life at school like ducks to water, I am very impressed.

For the next two weeks we will be concentrating on forming letters and numbers correctly, The children have a very clear objective when it comes to letter formation and this will be used to help them write numbers also.

In our writing, we are learning to find words from the class word wall that we can copy and then Mrs Holmes can help with the tricky words.  We finished our pig stories, here is Jun's for you to have a look at, you are most welcome to come into the class and have a look at your own child's artwork.

Wonderful Wednesday in Room 6

Wow! What a cool day in Room 6.
We began with singing practice and a visit to our school Library where Mrs O'Leary read us an amazing story called "Peanuts".  Thanks to all those children who remembered to return their library book.

After the Library we went to Move It in the school hall with Maree Hughes.  We had great fun learning some of the fundamental loco-motor movements and playing on some of the gymnastics gear.  We are so lucky to have all these things in our school.

We came back to class and got stuck into some maths.  We are learning about bonds with 5 and how to make 5, We need to practice this a lot to make sure we remember our "friends of five".  Practice at home if you get the chance.

Friday in Room 6

The children all attended their first school Mass and it is important that you all know how wonderful your children behaved.  Great work Room 6.
The Mass was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

For Golden Time this week the children decided that popcorn and a movie would be a great reward.   We became mad scientists on a mission to discover what makes popcorn pop, we discovered that there is a tiny bit of water inside the kernel that becomes steam when it gets heated, this causes the kernel to crack and turn itself inside out.
Great learning Room 6!!

Maths in Room 6

We are working on the forwards and backwards number sequence in the range of 1-10.
We are using the language of the number before and the number after. For example, what number is before 4? What number is after 4?  This is a very important concept for children to understand, if you have the chance please practice at home.

Today our number was 4, we were talking about the different ways to make 4, 1 and 3, 2 and 2.

Wednesday is Library Day

Please ensure that your child has returned their library book.  We visit the school Library at 9.45am on Wednesday morning and the children really love getting a new book issued.

This week in class we are learning the letters a, t and p.
In our writing we are trying to use the words, I, am, to  and the. If you see these words in your children's bedtime stories, do make the extra effort to point them out, or have a go at writing them on the fridge with some magnetic letters.

Their word walls are there to help too.

Our First Week

The children have had a great first week at school.
We began learning our letter sounds, we have looked at and a, we will continue with next week.
Today we made afghans to help us remember the sound and as part of Golden Time we invited the class teddies to a picnic on the field.

In maths we are working on our numbers up to 10, knowing which number comes before a number and which number comes after.
The children are settled and ready to get on with some learning.
